‘Tis the Giving Season
The holidays are drawing near, and our students are getting excited. Many of our Mentors are thinking about getting their students a special gift to celebrate. We ask that if you are planning to give your student a present, to be very careful in what you do. Some families may feel threatened that you are providing something for their child that they can not afford. Some families may look at you as a huge resource and ask you to do more than you think is appropriate. Think carefully about your gift giving, and see if there is something that the whole family or the whole class can enjoy. Take in a treat for the school's holiday party and ask the parent to help you. Or give the child a tin of cookies or candy to share with his/her family. Give your student a family appropriate CD or video, if the family has the equipment. Think about how you would feel if someone gave your child that gift, and decide if it is appropriate to do so. If you find that your student's family is in dire need, please let your school coordinator or principal know. The Board of Education has several groups who ask for the names of families that they can help. If you want to make a large donation to the family, but don't want the family to know that you are the donor, call us and we can help you figure out a way to do this through an outside agency. Most of all, enjoy the beauty and good will of the season with your student!

We Hear....
...an East Salisbury Mentor should be really proud of his Mentee. He has made vast improvements in his behavior this year. He is much more respectful to his teachers and his mentor than he was last year. He has improved so much that his teacher nominated him for Student of the Month. As they were taking his picture, he kept saying, "My mom won't believe this! She just won't believe this!" ...a Salisbury Middle Mentor told us about taking her two Mentees to the Pocomoke Parade..."We left after school and went to my parents' house in Pocomoke. We ate a dinner of burgers and homemade fries and sat down as a "family" for dinner. We then put on our cold weather gear and walked to the Hartley Hall Nursing Home to meet my great-grandmother (who will soon be 94). After we left there, we went and watched the parade. As the time got later and the temperature colder, we migrated back towards my parents home. We had a snack of homemade chocolate chip cookies, packed up, and I returned both of my mentees home safe and sound!"

***please remember to get written permission from parents IF you decide to do an outside activity***
